Beyond Fredericksburg: Boerne, Luckenbach, Buchanan Dam and Llano.
In early April we drove east from Las Cruces, New Mexico into Texas for a short week at Bending Oaks RV Resort near Fredericksburg. Since we’d already seen Fredericksburg, this time we explored nearby spots: Luckenbach, south to Boerne, and took a day trip north to Buchanan Dam and Llano. If you’re ever RVing in the area, check out Bending Oaks RV Resort. It’s rustic, yet a beautiful place to set down amongst the majestic bending oaks AND they are a cat sanctuary AND have longhorns! Honestly we also liked that it was a 21 and over park as well. Don’t worry - the 75 to 100 cats are managed mostly off-site and unless you take a stroll around the perimeter you won’t run into too many. Management feeds them in two areas to draw the cats away from RVers. The cats are dropped off, left by RVers (or escaped) - and all receive shots, as well as spay and neuter. Local farms ask for batches of cats to serve as barn cats so its a win-win endeavor for all involved.

Recommended Day Trips:
DAY ONE - Drive the Willow City Loop to look at the Blue Bonnets! Be respectful of the private homes along the path, but don’t be deterred by the No Trespassing signs you’ll find everywhere. This is not a private road, they are simply attempting to keep people from trespassing on their driveways and property.
Continue north to Llano for lunch at the lovely War Trail Distillery where you can sample yummy pizzas and a whole lot more. Take a moment to stroll thru this adorable little town with friendly Texans! After checking out the cute little shops, walk down to Glenwelge Park - it’s a stunner!
Glenwelge Park offers a nice place for a post-lunch stroll.
From Llano continue north and east to Buchanan Dam. Honestly TX 2241 road to Bluffton offered nearly as many Blue Bonnets to see as the Willow City Loop but you just never know what’s in bloom! We explored north to Buchanan Lake Village before turning south to the Llano County Park. For a fun thing to do - set your GPS for the Buchanan Dam Bridge where you can stroll across the river to find a swing centered above. Perfect spot for a photo-op and more steps to add to your day.
DAY TWO - BEFORE you visit Luckenbach, Texas, check out their website (click here) for hours of operation, music events and more. This place is pretty fluid with operations and you’ll want to know ahead of time to plan how Day Trip Two evolves. Meaning, if it’s music in the evening at Luckenbach you’re after - keep that in mind as you’d want to head south to Boerne (pronounced Bernie like the famous movie Weekend at Bernie’s) FIRST then north to Luckenbach for the evening before retiring back at Bending Oaks RV Resort. Either way, Luckenbach is a must-see as is Boerne! In fact, dare I say that we enjoyed Boerne much more than crowed Fredericksburg?! Yes, yes we did!!! There’s too much to write about so check out our video for more information! Visit Boerne!
