Hiking the Tongue River Canyon in Sheridan, Wyoming

Who doesn’t love a hike filled with picturesque rock formations, towering cliffs, stunning wildflowers all the while serenaded by the power of a beautiful river filled with gigantic mountain boulders and endless wildlife? Yes, please! Did I mention it’s NOT crowded??? The usual rule applies, get up early, grab coffee and go BEFORE the masses arrive at the trailhead.

The “top” doesn’t exactly exist as this hike goes for miles and miles of stunning scenery.

We arrived per our usual at the trailhead to find the parking lot void of cars. Instead of setting out on foot immediately, we chose to take our time packing up, awaiting for the sun to fill the deep canyons with color as shadows aren’t always the best for photos. Part of our leisure was to time our exit when Tongue River Brewing Company would be open as I had heard from locals that this was THE place to go for the best pizza in Wyoming. They weren’t kidding….more on that below.

Advice for the hike? Plan for the weather of course, bring layers and lots of water (or a filter and climb down for some crisp mountain creek offerings), snacks, bear spray, and don’t forget tick spray or wear your gaiters. The hike itself is only 5 miles out and back with an 813’ elevation gain but you can continue hiking up the canyon to the grassy knoll and beyond. If you love photography you’ll be in for a real treat, with stunning canyon and gorge views ever changing in color variations as the light of the day makes its appearance. Marmots, snakes, birds, chipmunks and the potential to spot black bear exist in this lovely portion of the Bighorn National Forest.

I stopped for a gazillion photos - the wildflowers were everywhere in all shapes, sizes, and colors. Truly beautiful. Heck even the dandelion held my interest.

As you wander, be sure to stop and listen for the chirping sounds of the marmots that populate the boulders along the trail. We had fun with one that seemed to want to tag along.

Bottom line, if you’re anywhere near Sheridan, Wyoming take the time to scout out this gorgeous hike! Check out our video for a sneak peek on the best pizza in Wyoming…
